The historic Locarno funicular is the most scenic and convenient way to reach Sacro Monte Madonna del Sasso and Orselina. From the latter stop you can catch the cable car to Cardada-Cimetta and set off on beautiful walks on the hillside paths.
The transportation system is a typical single-track funicular, characterized by an elegant layout that largely follows the course of the Ramogna stream. It features valuable technical works such as the arched bridge composed of stone blocks or the steel trellis bridge over the Ramogna. Also worthy of attention are the downstream station, integrated into a late 19th-century residential complex, and the late neoclassical Art Nouveau-inspired upstream station. Beautiful vintage carriages from 1958 run on the line, which is perfectly integrated into the landscape.
